Windows 8 - How to Restore your Device using Refresh and Reset in Windows 8

Windows 8 Release Preview introduces two new system recovery features, Refresh and Reset, that were previously offered by some original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). There is a big difference between these two features that you should be aware of.
  • Refreshing your PC reinstalls Windows and keeps your personal files, settings, and any apps that came with your PC and apps that you installed from Windows Store.
  • Resetting your PC reinstalls Windows but deletes your files, settings, and apps—except for the apps that came with your PC.
Recommended practices:
  • Try to restore system first. See my previous post. If this does not work for you, go to the next option.
  • Try to refresh your PC or device. If this does not work for you, go to the next option.
  • Reset your PC or device.
If none of the options above works for you, maybe there is some hardware issue. Contact the vendor if it is still covered by warranty. Or, troubleshoot it yourself or ask a friend or professional for further assistance.

Refresh your Device
From the Charms Bar, select More PC Settings. (To show the Charms Bar, move your mouse cursor to the upper right corner until it appears. Select Settings.)
